Negotiate Salary

Negotiating a raise? Furthermore to our counter offer discussion, it occurred to us that maybe candidates are not sure how to approach their current employer for a direct salary conversation. Try this before trying the non-recommended counteroffer approach.

1. Record your performance throughout the year. Prepare an achievement list.

2. Set a target. Bring a reasonable number to the table based on research and industry info. Also remember there is more than just compensation to negotiation. Ask for additional perks such as vacation, time in lieu, monthly expenses, increased responsibilities etc....

3. Prepare your boss. Schedule a time to meet specifically to evaluate and discuss your salary. Timing is everything. Be vigilant about the stress levels in the office and on your boss. They say "No". Don't give up! Ask for construction criticism and other forms of compensation. Talk to your employer first to see if anything can be worked out internally. If they are repeatedly saying NO - then it might be time to move.
